Dear Mayor, CEO, Pittwater Ward Councillors, Jeremy and Barbara,
I am writing on behalf of SIRA with our comments on Thomas Stephens Reserve.
We understand that plans are well-advanced for a major rebuild at Thomas Stephens Reserve and that Council has completed its community consultation procedures. However, there have been significant changes since the original plan was on public exhibition in March 2021, and ongoing concerns have been raised by Island residents and other local resident groups. We would like to bring these to Council’s attention.
SIRA has been closely involved with the development and implementation of the Church Point Plan of Management since its inception and appreciates the opportunities for working collaboratively with Council. Thomas Stephens Reserve is vitally important to offshore residents for access to transport and basic services such as the Post Office and food items, but also as the only meeting place for all residents. It enables social connection, both informally and for special events (such as the Anzac Day service where the reserve was filled with onshore and offshore residents).
The historic significance of Church Point has been recognised in the heritage listing of both the wharf and Post Office and Store. The Reserve needs to continue to reflect this historic character.
I am attaching a short document outlining our major concerns. We urge consideration of these items and look forward to discussing possible alternatives with Council.
Yours sincerely
Dr Robyn Iredale AM
President,
Scotland Island Residents Association
