At a Community Forum in September last year a number of recommendations were put forward to rejuvenate the Cargo Wharf and Leahvera Reserve areas. The objective was to enhance and manage these areas for safe and enjoyable community use. It was recognised that a core need for the Cargo Wharf – Leahvera Reserve area was to successfully accommodate diverse activities which include a commuter boat tie up facility, the Island’s only working wharf for materials delivery and removal, the use of kayaks and similar watercraft, the public use of recreational beach space, and the enjoyment of the bush reserve.
[wpfilebase tag=fileurl id=98 linktext=’Recommendations from this Community Forum’ /] included proposals to reinstate the old walkway through Leahvera Reserve with associated bush-care, improve parking arrangements for Cargo Wharf users, clear the beach to enhance it as a recreation facility, and establish a kayak storage facility.
Since that meeting progress has been made toward establishing a community owned kayak storage rack. Council has now agreed to support a community project to build and maintain a set of kayak racks above the beach area. This will enable the Cargo Beach area to be kept clear for community recreation use. A number of design options have been explored and a funding application to Keep NSW Beautiful has been prepared. If the funding application is successful the Cargo Users Group will meet (along with any others who may wish to be involved) to finalise plans for the kayak racks, their installation and clean-up of the waterfront area.
Meanwhile, an on-site community forum is planned by the Cargo Users Group for 10.00 am Saturday September 27th to discuss progress and canvas further input.
