Newsletter of the Scotland Island Residents Association   Volume 3, Issue 29; June 2002

Editorial:

This month has seen a dramatic shift in the Scotland Island community response to the water issue that has so affected us all. For the first time in many years, you, the residents, decided to take action. Many of you rang council with great effect. As most of your know, our campaign has meant that no immediate action in relation to the cutting off of water is to happen. The water committee, under the leadership of Rod Smith, will be negotiating with Pittwater Council and Sydney Water to achieve the best outcome for us. If they need more support I am sure I speak for us all in saying we are there to help!

In this Issue:

New newsletter name next month!

The next issue of the newsletter is to have a major change in appearance and a small change in attitude! Many of our subscribers are on the western shores and further up Pittwater. For this reason we have decided to rename the newsletter The Pittwater Offshore Newsletter.

We will keep the same basic format, welcome your input at any time and try to include items of general interest to all who live at Australia's finest geographic address.

SHOROC Safe Party Project

Parties can be fun, exciting and a great way to relax and enjoy yourself with friends. However sometimes parties can get out of control and become very unsafe. By organising your party effectively and following a few simple tips, you can host a party that is both enjoyable and safe.

The SHOROC member Councils incorporating Manly, Mosman, Pittwater and Warringah have received a Small Project Grant from the NSW Safe Communities Program to develop a ‘Safe Party Project’, to help parents, hosts and guests deliver and enjoy successful and safe parties. A working party was recently established with representatives from the SHOROC councils, Northern Sydney Health Promotion and local Police to co-ordinate the Safe Party Project, which will involve the development and dissemination of a ‘Safe Party Kit’ and the establishment of a Party Register with local police. The Kit will include tips and advice for both parents and young people on how to host a safe party. By registering your party, local police can provide you with information on hosting a safe party and stand-by or regularly patrol the vicinity of the registered party. It anticipated that the Safe Party Kit and Party Register will be launched in December, in readiness for the summer party season.

If you would like further details about the project, or would like to be placed on a waiting list for the Safe Party Kit, please contact Jennifer Moran on 9970 1199.

Pittwater Offshore Directory – 2002-2003

THE PITTWATER OFFSHORE DIRECTORY 2002/2003 IS ALMOST HERE

The purpose of this Second Edition Directory is to provide useful information to the Pittwater Offshore Community – for that urgent repair, the quick offshore telephone number, the references that are significant to offshore living.

Once again, a group of dedicated people have come together to develop this Directory in order to facilitate our lifestyle.  The effort invested has been enormous.  The time taken to publish this edition has been, you won’t be surprised to hear, much greater than anticipated.

The Directory lists products and services, a much greater range when compared to the first one, which are of potential value to offshore residents, supplied by offshore, as well as mainland, businesses.  It has an up to date ‘White Pages’ telephone list of all offshore households, valuable information on Council and community services, and reference material from emergency actions, to spiders and ticks.

Support and participation has come from all the offshore communities, and copies of the Directory, which will have a currency of at least one year, will go to residents in these communities.

The Directory team is very appreciative of the many businesses that have supported the  Directory through their advertising.

Recent Island Break-ins - Beware

A number of homes have been broken into last week on the Eastern side of the island in the area adjacent to Eastern Wharf. The break-ins occurred at night in homes that were unoccupied. A young male with long blonde hair has been seen acting suspiciously in the area. We pride ourselves as islanders that we live in a safe environment - and so we must be very aware of strangers in our midst. The thefts have focussed on power tools. If you see someone or something that looks suspicious - call the Broken Bay Water Police (9979-4044) immediately or if no answer call 000.

Island Thinking

An oxymoron or are we a rich thinking community?

Island Thinking is a series of gatherings to enable us to share our artistic and intellectual endeavours. It is envisaged that on two successive Saturday evenings someone will share
the fruits of their study – academic, art, music and the like. On the first Saturday the subject will be presented and the second Saturday will allow further questions after reflection on the presentation. With enough people willing to present this can be repeated about 8 times over the coming year. The subject matter is entirely up to the presenter but is generally aimed at offering an insight into the particular realm of study.

The programme so far:

1. Saturday 22nd /29th June 7:30 to 10pm – Grahame Cover
“A walk in the woods.” We use language, observation, reason and belief to build a picture of the world and of infinities beyond. The ancient Vedic system of language and philosophy is perhaps the most rigorous and comprehensive analysis of this topic every undertaken. Did they discover the meaning of life, or just avoid having to get a real job like everyone else? Find out at the inaugural meeting of Island Thinking.
2. Rebecca Vick – Something from her recent Masters Degree.
The venue: Jenni and Grahame The black house on Florence Terrace, 5 houses south of
Eastern Wharf on the left.

RSVP: Jenni or Grahame 9997 8724

Group Septic Pump-Out

I need to pump out my septic in the very near future, and was wondering if anyone else is interested in a Group Pump Out, in order to reduce the cost. Phew!

My tanks are located on the waterfront near Eastern Wharf (Peter Balls ex house). Depending on who is interested, a decision should be made on how to go about this. I believe a similar operation was carried out in the past, so would appreciate any information on how, (boat or truck), with whom, cost, contact names/tel. nos. etc. I was casually informed a few years ago, it would cost about $700, so a real saving could be made if we were to share the costs.
