Len Duck to
Retire:
After many
decades of service, Len Duck, Ferry Master extraordinaire,
is to retire. Len is known to ALL of you. Through thick
and thin, in all weather and with a unique charm, Len has
provided us with a lifeline to the mainland. But more than that, he has been a friend to all, a fountain
of knowledge, has done more for the tourist trade on the
peninsula than any other and above all - a really decent,
sensible and loving human being.
Len's final
trips will be on Friday June 30th 2000.

As planned,
these surveys were either delivered directly to
households by the famous '32' distributors, or sent by
post to all non resident owners.
By the 18th of
June, all these surveys should have been collected by the
distributors or posted back.
If you haven't
filled in and returned your survey
please do so without delay and get it to Brian Cross
(9997-8820), Barry Haycock (9979-9025), Shirley Page
(9997-1875), or Greg Roberts (9979-9599) by
Sunday 25th of June
Grahame Cover
is developing the format for the analysis and he is
looking for some residents who would have a little time
to help. Please phone Grahame on 9997-8724.
We plan to
present the finished information to both residents and
council by mid to late July.

So far,
the answers in the negative
Response to our
request for historic (or even interesting) pictures of
the island has been spectacularly underwhelming. But
then, we are all so contemporary aren't we? Perhaps you
have a relative who clicked a Kodak on these shores all
those years ago? Or even banged off a Box Brownie at the cavorting at Bells wharf in the summer of '26?
Woodcuts,
etchings, watercolours, acrylics, oils of the Island or
its activities would be immensely valuable contributions to compiling the history of the Island now in the pipeline.
Remember old Uncle Bert and Aunt Frederica who were so
taken by the Pearl of Pittwater that they screamed their
delight as the blazed away. The results would be turning
brown in an album somewhere.
Carmen Ky
(9997-5643) and Leicester Warburton (9997-4489) are
standing by the phone waiting for your call. And our legs
are aching something horrible.

Tennis
Wharf Working Party:
Jennifer
Knox Reports: The Tennis Wharf team has
completed the new pontoon which is of great benefit to
all who use it. It is stable and floating beautifully.
Congratulations to all concerned.
A reminder that
neighbourhood watch area coordinators will meet in late July. Brian
Cross will contact each person concerned.
Further
to public enthusiasm expressed for more car parking at Church Point,
with some private spaces being available for lease, a proposal for a
new car park for the community has been developed by Barrelle Partners
Architects for Scotland Island resident Ron Barrelle.
This proposal has reached a stage where it should be put on public exhibition reasonably soon to get a community response.
The
broad principles of the proposal are :
An
extra 100 – 120 cars are proposed in addition to the existing
300 now in the car park.
However, 400 (plus) cars will not fit in the existing car park.
Therefore, 200 spaces will stay in the current car park and the rest
will be in a ground plus one level car park located between Mini Mart
and Mitchells.
Some
of these (on the bottom layer) will be available to purchase as lease
- probably 21 years. Dinghy tie up / storage is also proposed,
with bike storage, etc.
A
shelter at commuter wharf is proposed as a drop off point for kids /
parcels, etc. The upper deck will be 2.4m above the existing road
(about the same height as “No Parking” signs) and will be
landscaped to minimise any impact from the water or the houses above.
The
extra space in the existing car park (generated by the car numbers
there reducing) is to go into a parkland proposal for a public
recreation.
This was a primary condition to get mainland agreement.

Scotland
Island Players:
The players are
looking for keen people to take part in their next planned production. Shakespeare's 'As You Like It' is on
the bill and should prove to be a great show, if
previous productions can be used as a guide! If you are
interested in participating, either as a player or behind
the scenes, please give Jillian Unwin (9979-8578) or Rod
Charls (9488-9791) a ring.
For those times
when you are just plain exhausted after a days
work, or you want to entertain
someone without the hassle of cooking, Iris Ong Andersson will look after you. Specialising in Asian food
(Curries, Laksas, Stir-fries), she will prepare it for collection, or will
deliver it to you if you prefer. Ring Iris on 9979 6821
or 0412 666 083 for details of her menu and prices.
