Help us to persuade Telstra to provide this service!
As many of you are aware, obtaining an ADSL (Broadband) connection if you live offshore in Pittwater is virtually impossible. There are alternatives to dialup but they are costly and not for everyone. Many offshore residents work from home, or are planning to do so. Now is your chance to influence Telstra.
What is ADSL?
ADSL - (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) -- A method for moving data over regular phone lines. An ADSL circuit is much faster than a regular phone connection, and the wires coming into the subscriber's premises are the same (copper) wires used for regular phone service. A commonly discussed configuration of ADSL would allow a subscriber to receive data (download) at speeds of up to 1.544 Megabits per second, and to send (upload) data at speeds of 128 kilobits per second
What does it cost?
In Australia, somewhere between $30 and $80 per month. Remember - no more phone call charges when connecting to the 'net. If you currently dialup the internet three a day (including drop outs) and pay for a separate phone line, ADSL could be cheaper and up to ten times faster.
Who can provide the service?
Telstra is the only organisation that can provide the exchange switching. However there are many providers of the actual service and that is your personal choice.
